This week, Lumbee Tribal Chairman Lowery joined UNC Pembroke to welcome Rick West to the university campus and the Museum of the Southeast American Indian. West is the founding director of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington, D.C. and New York City. He will be the new elder in residence at UNC-Chapel Hill at the American Indian Heritage Center. In addition to his career at NMAI, he is an acclaimed scholar and accomplished Indian Law attorney. West toured the Museum of the Southeast American Indian. One of the extra special moments was the wonderful stories and conversation about our very own Helen Maynor Scheirbeck, who advocated for the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian and later served as the Director of Public Programs. Nancy Strickland Chavis, Director/Curator and Lecturer, hosted the visit.
