Yeoman Chief Vernon Chesley Chavis, a native of the Pembroke community, dropped by the Lumbee Housing Complex as he returned to the tribal territory today. He is a recruiter for the U.S. Coast Guard. Chavis said one of his goals is to boost the Native enlistment in the Coast Guard. He shared with Chairman Lowery and some of our tribal staff how the U.S. Coast Guard is offering major bonuses and a two-year enlistment with the same perks of a four-year enlistment.
The Guard also has several major bonuses including a $25,000 bonus for Electronics Technician, and up to $50,000 for a culinary specialist. Chavis has 18 years with the guard and has served in areas such as Charleston, Washington, DC and Virginia. He said joining the Guard offers enlistees the same military benefits as every other military branch. For more information, call Yeoman Chavis at 803.622.9653 or email at vernon.c.chavis@uscg.mil
