Lumbee Homecoming Includes Revival of Ancient Competitive Games at Annual Indigenous Games 2023
On Saturday, Lumbee Homecoming participants had an opportunity to see the first time that the game of Chunkey was played here competitively in more than 400 years. The game was part of the 1st Annual Indigenous Games, which were hosted by the Lumbee Tribe of N.C. along with the Museum of the Southeast American Indian. Even with a down pour of rain, tribal members from the Haliwa-Saponi, Navajo, Waccamaw Siouan, Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Shawnee and the Lumbee Tribe played competitive games of Chunkey and Social Stickball on Lumbee Field at UNC Pembroke.
