Annual Clean-Up Croatan Indian Memorial Cemetery 2021
Almost 100 people traveled to Adabelle, Bulloch County, Georgia this weekend for the annual journey to clean the Croatan Indian Memorial Cemetery. Ancestors of the Lumbee traveled to this Georgia Community for work as they followed the turpentine industry in the late 1800's and into the early 1900’s.
This weekend was the largest clean-up group to make the trip. The attendees included local citizens, a large delegation from the Saddletree community. Some traveled from several cities including Atlanta, Jessup, New York, Baltimore, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Fayetteville as well as coastal cities, and throughout Robeson County. There are around 35 graves in the Croatan cemetery. Our ancestors also established a church and a school during their time in Southeast Georgia.
