The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina owns and maintains six apartment complexes as part of its ongoing effort to provide safe, sanitary, affordable housing to eligible tribal families.  Three of the complexes, Stedman Estates, Red Hill and Hawkeye Sands, were created through a provision of the 1937 Housing Act, to improve the living conditions of low-income families.  These housing units are referred to as 37 Stock Units. The four remaining complexes, Heritage Haven, Saddletree Estates, Lumbee Heritage Elders Court , are Elder Housing Units, available only to elders 55 years and older.

Red Hill Apartments are located in Robeson County and consist of 50 units. Hawkeye Sands Apartments are located in Hoke County and consist of 62 units.  These housing units are available to low-income tribal families, and the rental fee is based on 20% of the family’s gross income. Heritage Haven is loated in the Fairmont area of Robeson County and consists of 31 units. Saddletree Estates is also located in Robeson County near Lumberton and consists of 16 units. Lumbee Heritage Elders Court is located in Scotland County and consists of 10 units. Stedman Estates also has 10 units and is located in Cumberland County. Most units are handicap accessible.  

All housing units are maintained and serviced by tribal staff.  Maintenance crews provide upkeep of site grounds and facilities.  Housing managers are on site to accept applications and assist tenants.  

In order to apply for a 37 Stock or Elders Housing Unit, the following criteria must be met:

• Applicants must be an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina

• Applications must be completed on site

• Applicants must meet income and/or age requirements
